Saving Alabama's estuaries: Local fire chief Jamie Hinton's idyllic coastal town of Magnolia Springs is just ten nautical miles from the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. All unauthorised action against the slick is banned, but Chief Hinton tells Outlook why he had to do something, even if it risked landing him in jail.

Ecuador Solstice: Ecuador's Quechua people are gathering to celebrate the Inti Raymi or sun festival. It is observed all across the Andes and it goes back to Incan times, when people in the southern hemisphere marked the winter solstice and the beginning of the indigenous new year.
