A sperm whale takes a breath in the warm surface waters of the open ocean. This will be the last breath it takes for over an hour as it dives down to the cold, dark depths of the deep ocean to find food. At the surface it took in air at the same pressure that we breathe. But down in the depths, at more than 1,000 metres below the surface, the pressure is 100 times that on the surface - crushing the whale's lungs to just one per cent of their normal volume.
