Professor of Sociology and Director of the London School of Economics, Ralf Dahrendorf gives his fifth Reith lecture from his series entitled 'The New Liberty'.

In this lecture entitled 'The Improving Society', Professor Dahrendorf evaluates how society might progess. Improvement, Professor Dahrendorf argues, goes to the core of this world: it is the social construction of human life-chances. Exploring the division of labour which creates our social structure, he contemplates the breakdown of education, work and leisure in determining people's happiness, and asks how we can change these structures for the better.
