Author Salman Rushdie speaks to Start the Week’s Andrew Marr about the ten years he spent in hiding after he was sentenced to death by the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 for writing The Satanic Verses. Rushdie was accused of mocking aspects of Islam through the novel. He lived under police protection and the pseudonym Joseph Anton during this period, fearing for his life and for the lives of those who had helped to publish the book. Now he has published his autobiography, Joseph Anton, in which he writes candidly about this period in his life.
