The peace and natural beauty of Emei Mountain draw hordes of tourists escaping the noise and pollution of the city. The monkey guardians start work early in the morning, banging gongs to entice the monkeys down from the mountains in time for the arrival of curious tourists. The macaques can get up to mischief and two monkey guardians recall how the animals can retaliate if provoked. However, the increasingly huge crowds of tourists are becoming like a tidal wave and the monkey guardians are wondering if their numbers should be restricted. On the other hand, such a measure will be unpopular with traders on the mountain, such as the owners of restaurants and hostels, for whom tourism brings in a better income than working the land.
