The city of Chengde is well known for its Summer Palace, built by the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi to escape the summer heat of Beijing. Equally famous are its Buddhist temples, where young lamas are trained to read Buddhist scriptures and perform rituals. Religion is a sensitive issue in China and is tightly controlled by the government; at the same time, it is being used to boost the local tourist trade.
