The forts at Vindolanda, alongside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, were built on top of each other, which means that the lower forts have been protected over the years and many of the Roman belongings have survived to this day. Archaeologists dig in the trenches of the forts to unearth numerous Roman artefacts and discoveries, including hair, shoes, slippers, fabric and a letter on a Roman tablet.
