Journey of the Nile (pt 2/3)

During the rainy season in the highlands of Ethiopia, the rain is soaked into the hillsides. Eventually the ground cannot absorb any more water so it collects on the surface and starts to trickle away. Rivulets become streams and eventually rivers. Sixty rivers flow into Lake Tana. Although many rivers flow into Lake Tana, only one flows out. A spectacular waterfall can be seen after the rainy season, which attracts many tourists. The falls are known as the Tis Isat Falls, which means 'Smoking Fire'. They are also called the Blue Nile Falls but the water is not blue since the river carries millions of tons of rich and fertile soil away from the farmers and the highlands of Ethiopia. The falls thunder into the enormous Blue Nile Gorge created by millions of years of erosion. From Ethiopia, the Nile flows into Sudan.
