Venezuela in South America is home to the Orinoco River. The river starts high in the mountains of central Venezuela, becoming a torrential flow of water by the time it reaches the bottom of the valley. It travels 2,100km from its source before it reaches the sea. Tropical forests make travelling on land difficult, so the river is used for transport. The Piaroa people have lived their traditional lifestyle by the Orinoco for thousands of years. The men fish while the women grow vegetables, including the yucca, and prepare food. The Orinoco delta is a region of wild forests and mangrove swamps and is a haven for wildlife. Industry has polluted many rivers but the Orinoco remains one of the most beautiful and unspoilt rivers in the world.
