The work of Thomas Barnardo (drama)

Charles Dickens presents a topical chat show about the changes to healthcare and medical science that were happening in Victorian times. We meet Thomas Barnardo, the man who provided a better alternative to the workhouses for children in need of a home. Tom talks about how a friend of his, Jim Jarvis, took him out to the East End of London one night, where he saw children sleeping on roofs and in gutters. It was this experience which inspired Tom to set up an institution which gave children a place where they would be safe, warm and well-fed. Tom also talks about how the Barnardo's motto came to be. He also explains how they take children out of dangerous situations, in order to keep them safe, even if this means breaking the law.
