John Elwyn

A look at the work of landscape painter John Elwyn who specialised in producing rural landscapes of south west Wales, though he lived in England for a large part of his life. Kim Howells praises his work, assessing his landscapes as being among the most accurate reflections of life in Wales. Howells and Robert Meyrick, head of the Aberystwyth School of Art analyse the content of two of Elwyn's paintings - Aberarth and Hymn Critics, the latter of which Howells describes as representing a more idealised view of Wales. Meyrick says that this reflects a memory of Wales from Elwyn's childhood in the 1920's. Windfalls and Before the Meeting are shown with Meyrick commenting on Elwyn's use of colour.
