Hugo Chavez, had been seriously ill with cancer for more than a year, and had undergone several operations in Cuba. The self-proclaimed revolutionary was a controversial figure in Venezuela and on the World stage, but was seen by many as a voice for the poor using Venezuela鈥檚 oil wealth to pursue socialist policies.
