How to measure temperature and save energy

In Ecomaths, Stefan Gates reads the story of Goldilocks to children in hospital and finds out why the temperature needs to be 鈥渘ot too hot, not too cold but just right鈥.

In Ecomaths, Stefan Gates visits the Royal London Hospital in London where he learns about measuring and controlling temperature. He reads the story of 鈥楪oldilocks and the Three Bears鈥 to a group of children. He learns about temperature by measuring three bowls of porridge using a thermometer and finds out why it is important that children who are sick are 鈥渘ot too hot, not too cold but just right鈥. Then he discovers that in the old children鈥檚 ward they control the temperature by opening the window! In the new hospital they use a computer to monitor and control temperature to ensure that the whole building is always the right temperature and they don鈥檛 waste energy. Stefan then visits Glenfrome Primary in Bristol where they have a 'coolest class鈥 challenge. They keep doors and windows closed and turn radiators down to make sure classrooms stay at a more consistent and comfortable temperature. They gather data that they then turn into charts so that they can understand which is the best class on saving energy.
