Inveresk - animation

The high ground in a loop of the River Esk offered a natural site for the small fort the Romans built here in the 2nd C AD. Over time a civilian settlement or vicus grew up outside the fort gates, servicing the needs of the soldiers and providing a place for Romans and locals to meet and do business. The surrounding area has revealed evidence of field systems, and possible parade ground and religious structures.
