India was the heart of the greatest empire the world has ever seen - the British Empire. Englishmen ruled the largest body of non-Europeans ever to be ruled by Europeans anywhere, and with them the British brought Western civilisation.
Now the Indian subcontinent is independent but can you put aside the legacies of the West? What remained of Western ways once the 'tour de force' of British rule had ended? John Roberts describes how independence was achieved by turning Western ideas against the Imperialists.
