As the railway network expands, the need for horse drawn carriages to transport goods and people declines. Trains are much quicker and can carry greater quantities of goods around the country. The skills of traditional blacksmiths are no longer needed. The interviewer points out that fresh fish will soon be able to be transported from Aberdeen to London overnight. The government has approved thousands of miles of new track and foundries and engineers are struggling to keep up with demand. Whilst the father doesn鈥檛 want to accept the future, his son is aware that their business is unlikely to survive.
