Nelson Mandela artist: “You can’t paint charismaâ€

Harold Riley, who was the only artist that Nelson Mandela sat for, speaks about his time with Nelson Mandela. Over a period of 18 months Mr Riley visited Mr Mandela six times.

The portrait that was created from 23 drawings sketched of Mr Mandela at his home in Johannesburg, later sold for $1m at the Rockefeller Centre in New York. It was sold in aid of the South African charity Imibala and the money from the sale went towards the cost of a new school.

In 1993 Salford City Council honoured Mr Mandela by presenting him with the city's Silver Medal. In 2005 he was given Salford's highest honour, the Freedom of the City, and to mark the occasion Mr Riley's portrait of Mr Mandela was unveiled at The Lowry arts centre.
