Former footballer Stan Collymore spoke about abusive messages and photos he has received on Twitter.

Police are investigating a series of racist and threatening messages sent to the ex-Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa striker via the microblogging site.

Stan Collymore said to Rachel Burden "you do wonder sometimes whether you are in 2014 or 1814" and that he's been sent 鈥減hotos of lynchings in the deep south of the United States".

Responding to the question that by retweeting the messages he could be perpetuating the abuse, Stan Collymore said "are we really trying to ignore racism in the United Kingdom in 2014?...I thought we were supposed to be an enlightened society".

Collymore has accused Twitter of not doing enough to stop the death threats and insults he has received.

Twitter says it can't comment on individual cases.
