Beth McLeod learns why the Amish way of life is thriving, not just surviving, in modern America; Jonathan Fryer takes an epic train journey through some formerly Soviet "Stans"

Beth McLeod learns why the Amish way of life is thriving, not merely surviving, in a globalised, 21st-century America; Jonathan Fryer takes an epic train trip from Volgograd to Ashgabat, taking in Russia and three of the former members of the USSR now better known as "the Stans" - Kazakhstan, Izbekistan and Turkmenistan. Everywhere along both their journeys there are signs of the past living on well into the present - and hints at the hard, modern choices determining how people live now.
