Writers, observers and even world leaders are making comparisons between Crimea and what happened in Kosovo, South Sudan, the Falklands, East Timor, and in Croatia and Montenegro – and debates in Scotland and Catalonia too.

But is it fair to compare these situations? And what do these comparisons highlight of Western and Russian double-standards in dealing with these crises? We speak to people who’ve lived through these conflicts.
