The Act of Settlement
The Act of Settlement in 1701 was a response to a constitutional crisis concerning the succession of the English and Irish Crowns. Anne, Mary II's sister was the legal heir to the throne but she herself had no heir. The Act agreed that on Queen Anne's death the right of succession would move to the House of Hanover.
