César Franck and his circle

Exploring the works of César Franck and his circle of devoted followers including Duparc, Ropartz, Chausson and Holmes.

Donald Macleod begins by looking at Franck and his devotees’ emergence into the mainstream of French music.

Teaching was central to Franck's life, and crucial in the formation of his circle of devoted followers, several of whom went on to become respected educators themselves.

As Franck and his disciples searched for a new direction in French music, few were able to resist the allure and all-pervading influence of Richard Wagner.

Franck's characteristic restraint and moderation was exploded by his feelings for his beautiful and talented pupil, Augusta Holmes. Donald Macleod tells the story of their relationship and the passionate music it inspired.

Finally, Macleod considers how Franck's circle of followers tirelessly promoted their mentor's music, and finally succeeded in crowning his name with a glory never achieved during his lifetime.
