Swaziland: Sarah Thembile Mkhonza

Swaziland, I Witnessed You

I looked at you with gloomy eyes,

saw one and two people fallen,

remembered it could have been me;

chanted to the march of the lonely woman,

walking away empty handed

after the death of a loved one.

I walked your streets on sunny days,

glanced at mountains with watery rocks,

knew that the future is secured in them;

wished the youth were as safe.

hoped inside my heart and searched,

wishing presence of warmth in all,

seeing some would miss out

for they were not protecting themselves

from the maladies of the day.

I watched you dancing,

reeds swaying this way and that

in comical moves of mirth

written in wanting feet

whose rhythm got lost in my dream

whose beginning rises

with each step of the dance

singing.....one day........one day,

We will dance a true dance,

That will make us one.
