Allan Little explores how the way Gavrilo Princip is remembered in Bosnia has changed over the years, from atheist revolutionary to Yugoslav partisan hero, to Serb Orthodox martyr, his image has mutated according to who was in charge in Sarajevo. A hundred years on from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, it turns out, this is still a land of parallel truths, running alongside one another but never converging - and each side tells itself the tale it needs to hear.

In Austria, Bethany Bell meets the Archduke's great-granddaughter, in the family crypt - and learns why she is still known as 'the princess', although the noble titles of the Austro-Hungarian empire were swept away after the war.
