Compton Road, Wolverhampton: Girl Guide with German Heritage

Mildred Laura Florence Whicker was the daughter of an English father and a German mother.

Her father died before the war, and as a result, Mildred and her mother found themselves victims of the anti-German sentiment that was becoming common during the war.

Mildred was active in the Girl Guides but in 1916 was asked to resign because of her mother鈥檚 nationality.

However, she was later encouraged to continue as a guide after personal involvement from Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who was the wife of Boy Scouts founder, Robert Baden-Powell.

After the war, Mildred went on to found her own school at Ashton House in Compton Road, Wolverhampton.
