Christians use water to baptise people. It is a symbol of ‘coming clean to God’.
Baptism as a baby is common for Anglicans and Catholics. Baptists and some other free Churches don’t baptise people until they are believers in Jesus for themselves, usually a little older than our viewers. It is a dramatic symbol of starting a new life as a Christian. At Ben’s church – he is 12 – the congregation sing ‘I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.’
Ben describes how he felt that God wanted him to make a public statement of his desire to be a Christian, and get baptised by his own choice. As people are lowered under water, the minister says: “On confession of your faith we baptise you now in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’ – this Christian way of describing God is called the Trinity. Ben says ‘I feel different, new, great: l loved it!’
