Charlie, 11, at his synagogue, explains that being Jewish means trying to live by the Commandment of the Torah, God’s agreement with the Jewish people. This includes the famous Ten Commandments. Torah scrolls are very precious, not least because they are so hard to make so perfectly. The words of God to Moses are hand copied. Marc Michaels is specially trained to write and repair Torah scrolls and demonstrates his work to us. This is a powerful expression of what ‘sacred words’ mean in the Jewish faith. He studied to do this – ‘like a Jedi with a quill’ he says. The work of being a scribe excites him. The test of a good scroll is: can a child, ‘not too clever and not too daft’ – an ordinary child – reads the scroll? This is a nice feature of Judaism, where children sometimes take centre stage!
