Val Stokes'Story

There were all kinds of street parties in Sheffield to celebrate VE Day. A photograph survives of a big celebration in Brightside.

It shows a two-year-old standing in pride of place on a long table laden with food. She is holding a knife next to a layer cake.

That little girl, now 72-year-old Val Stokes, spent most of the war without her father who was away in North Africa when she was born. She didn't meet him until she was three.

Val thinks the party would have been organised by her mother who ran the local corner shop and was able to barter various items to get hold of enough sugar coupons to make the cake.

Val shared a family photograph with Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Sheffield's Kate Linderholm that tells a very personal story from a day of national significance.
