Seven Fifa officials have been arrested on charges they received millions of US dollars in bribes.

A separate criminal investigation has also been opened in connection with the awarding of the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cups.

The Fifa presidential election, in which Sepp Blatter faces Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, will still take place on Friday despite the arrests.

New York Times journalist Matt Apuzzo said the charges 鈥済o back decades鈥� and accuse Fifa members of corruptions of 鈥渁ll levels鈥�.

Fifa communications director Walter De Gregorio said news of the arrests 鈥渉urts鈥� but 鈥渃onfirms we are on the right track鈥�.
