Wysall is one of only four 'Thankful' Villages in Nottinghamshire which didn't suffer any losses in World War One. All twelve of the men who left to serve in the armed forces returned safely at the end of the conflict.

In recognition of their good fortune, the village bought a clock and mounted it on the tower of the Parish Church as a thanksgiving memorial. Inside Holy Trinity there's also a brass plaque naming each of the men, which ends, 'Thanks be to God.'

Wysall is pretty village south-west of Nottingham and at the time, most of the families were engaged in farming or as builders. The neighbouring villages of Widmerpool, Willoughby and Stanton-on-the-Wolds were not so fortunate; they lost sixteen men between them.

Around fifty places in Britain have been identified, as being spared casualties in the Great War and having the 'Thankful Village' status, according to research carried out by historians Tom Morgan, Rod Morris and Norman Thorpe. In Nottinghamshire the three other villages are named as Maplebeck, Wigsley and Cromwell.
