Laurence Binyon was a curator at the British Museum who, at the outbreak of World War One, wrote the poem For the Fallen.

The work would become one of the best known poems of the war which has subsequently appeared on numerous memorials and read at countless Remembrance ceremonies. His work was also greatly admired by other poets such as Ezra Pound.

Binyon worked in the Print Room at the British Museum and had a special interest in Japanese, Chinese and European prints.

Although Binyon was too old to fight in World War One, nonetheless he travelled to France and helped wounded soldiers as a volunteer in a British hospital.
