St Petersburg - Democracy and Control

The panel debates: what do Russians mean by democracy - is Russia truly democratic?

In the first of three debates from a Russia recently emerged from 70 years of Communism, the 主播大秀 visits Moscow and asks: What do the Russian people mean by democracy? Critics of President Putin say he's using Soviet-style techniques to keep a lid on his opponents, and the country's right to host the G8 summit has been questioned. How much control do the Russian people really have over their lives and how much choice do they have in their politicians? The panellists debating this include mainstream politician Viktor Yefsukov, SPS politician Mikhail Tolstoy, Natalia Kudryavtseva, head of St Petersburgh International Business Association, and award-winning journalist Diana Kachalova.
