The winner of the 1997 Booker Prize is announced. After weeks of speculation the winner was announced as The God of Small Things. Also in the programme, the Teatro Real Opera House in Madrid has opened after a face-lift, John Denver is killed in a plane crash, an exhibition by the American artist Andreas Serrano in Melbourne is closed down and the first Georgian arts festival is opened in Tibilisi by Vanessa Redgrave.
