Britain's finance minister - George Osborne - is in New York on Monday. It's the first of a series of trade missions designed to reassure Britain's major trading partners in the wake of last month's vote to leave the European Union. The British government says the key message to global investors will be to stick with Britain - despite the looming prospect of Brexit. Similar trips to China and Singapore are planned for next week, ahead of a meeting a G20 leaders in Chengdu.

The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed victory in an election for the upper house of parliament - saying voters backed his economic policies. But while the election was fought on the economy, many suspect that Mr Abe is planning to use his increased majority to try and change Japan's constitution to allow to engage in military action abroad.

In the north of England, near the border with Scotland, a business is preparing to open a new open-cast coal mine, to feed coal fired power stations. Local environmentalists - and some residents - oppose the plans, while others say the jobs it will bring will benefit their community. Marie Keyworth reports.
