The acrobatic scissor dancers of Peru

Performed in parts of Peru, the Scissors Dance is a traditional event that tests the physical and spiritual strength of the participants.

The dancers perform difficult stunts and leaps, accompanied by the music of a violin and a harp. All the acrobatic moves have to be performed whilst holding a pair of scissors.

The origin of the dance is unclear. Some believe it began as an act of worship to the mountain gods high in the Andes. In the 1500s the dancers performed to show resistance to Spanish rule.

The Travel Show's Carmen Roberts went to Lima to find out more.
