Shirley Ann and Karlis - Paint It Blue

Husband and wife Shirley and Karlis share a conversation about participating in Spencer Tunick’s ‘Sea of Hull’ installation. This was particularly significant for them both because Karlis arrived in Hull as a child refugee after the 2nd World War. He was born in Riga, Latvia which was under Soviet, and then German occupation. His family got out and followed the refugee trail through Europe before arriving in Hull when Karlis was 3-years old. He was brought up in the city, which was bombed-out when he arrived, so to return as it readied itself for 'City of Culture' felt very significant. Karlis and Shirley have been together for over 20-years and married in 1999 on the Scottish island of Arran. They came into the relationship with five children between them, and they now have one grandchild. Karlis was a gardener and Shirley was a natural healthcare practitioner. They're both now retired.

This conversation was record in The Listening Project Booth in Castle Douglas
