Flintoff: I didn't trust instincts when taking England captaincy

Andrew Flintoff says doubts over his fitness and a lack of control over team selection meant he was unsure about taking the England captaincy.

"I was stood doing the press thinking 'this isn't right'. I was looking at the team thinking 'I wouldn't have four or five of you at least'," recalled the Lancastrian.

The all-rounder also likened the period leading up to his appointment to TV shows 'The Voice' and 'X-Factor'. "It was like a public vote; am I captain or am I not captain," he added.

"I realised afterwards I could lead through performance and be a good right-hand man to the captain".
