Mary-Ann Ochota discovers why narrow boats are so narrow.
Narrow boats date back to the 18th Century and their narrow design was inspired partly by elongated boats working underground in coal mines.
Engineer James Brindley's boats were designed to fit through his new canal system and squeeze through the narrow 'Brindley Locks'.
