All-party backing for new 999 staff assault law

Assaults on emergency workers could be dealt with more severely under new laws which have the backing of the government.

Chris Bryant's private member's bill could be first one to make it to the statute books from an opposition MP.

He told Daily Politics presenter Jo Coburn about existing sentences, and how that would change if, and when, his bill brings in a new law.

And it seems the current planned date of it being heard in the Commons, April, and in the Lords in May, could be brought forward, if a "Tory wink" from Andrea Leadsom can be believed.
