Some big news about the NME Awards as we can reveal that iconic Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson is to be honoured with the Icon Award, the first of it's kind. Shirley will be picking up the award in person at the annual awards ceremony held at the Brixton Academy in London on February 14th.

Garbage have produced six studio albums - beginning with their self-titled debut - which sold over four million copies, going double platinum in the UK, US and Australia, and winning them the MTV award for 'Best Breakthrough Act' back in 1996. From there the band produced five more studio albums, receiving a total of 27 award nominations, including seven Grammy Award nominations and two BRIT Award nominations

Although she is known for being the outspoken and dynamic frontwoman of the band, Shirley's career over the last three decades has crossed from music to activism - she's done a lot of work with PETA, AIDS research, PABLOVE and GIRLS ROCK. And as a reflection of all her work, was deemed 'Activist of the Year' by Forbes last year, citing her as "A feminist icon for a new generation of musicians and music fans"
