An 'Electronic Lover From Liverpool' Desert Island Disco

Architect David Doughty shares his favourite clubbing tracks from the years 1998-2003. The electro-heavy selection includes Vitalic, Laurent Garnier, Annie and The Rapture.

David Doughty, an architect from Liverpool, shares his favourite clubbing tracks from the years 1998-2003, when he was 鈥渂asically obsessed with electronic music, clubs, DJ鈥檌ng and everything in between.鈥

He explains: 鈥淢y love of electronic music properly began when I was around 15 or so with the likes of massive chart acts such as the Prodigy. When I was in college in the Merseyside area and was finally old enough (or, between us, almost old enough) to get into proper clubs, there was an amazing scene in Liverpool.

Cream at Nation was obviously the big club and whilst a lot of my mates went into the main room for the headliners, I was always more taken with the house music in The Annexe and more techno styles in The Courtyard. Standout moments are Yousef starting his career really in the Annexe, with legendary six hour sets that totally opened my mind to this style of House Music with tracks from Derrick Carter etc.

Another Annex standout was a French House night with 脡tienne de Cr茅cy in the mix. And a massive watershed moment for me was seeing Laurent Garnier perform 鈥楿nreasonable Behaviour鈥 when he mixed Donna Summer鈥檚 鈥業 Feel Love鈥 into 鈥楾he Man WithThe Red Face鈥.

After a while it was Fridays each month with Bugged Out but there where so many other great nights in the city too. Voodoo for Techno where DJs like Hell, Jeff Mills and other Underground Resistance Label crew members played. Then you had No Fakin鈥 at the Zanzibar for the hip-hop heads, where I saw Grandmaster Flash play a set.

So my mix kind of starts on this theme of French & US house. At the time a good friend of mine on my architecture course 鈥 who like me had little interest in architecture and an obsession for music - was housemates with the group who started the Chibuku鈥 Shake Shake night. We saw it take off from a small room in The Lemon Lounge, on Berry Street, through to the massive night it became.

A short journey away in Manchester, were amazing nights such as Robodisco, The Red Light and Sankeys, and a group of us would often make trips there. A stand out night was seeing Erol Alkan start his career there around the time of the electroclash explosion (which I personally loved). I also remember a night seeing the original Avalanches crew, play a mind blowing set (which I loved) and the massive moment where Felix da Housecat played at Sankey鈥檚 鈥 it was the moment a DJ became a rock star, the place just went off and when he played 鈥榁italic La Rock 01鈥. I don鈥檛 think I will ever forget it?! 鈥 it was like an electronic music mosh pit 鈥 amazing.

鈥淚n the summer of 2003 I amazingly passed my BA degree in architecture and moved away to Ireland for two years and it kind of ended my time with clubbing. Hopefully the track selection encapsulates an incredible time in music in my life, meeting so many like-minded people. It鈥檚 really sad that, especially in my home city in Liverpool, so many of these places are now gone. However for those there at the time, I guess, the memories live on forever?
