American newspaper columnist Joyce Maynard was used to receiving fan mail. One day a very different kind of letter arrived for her - it was from a prisoner in California. She wrote back, starting a relationship with this man, who liked to sign all his letters 'your friend always, Grizzly'. Their relationship deepened, but behind his nickname was a terrible secret.
