Despite being the world's wealthiest countries, decades of exploitation, disease and war have rendered the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo the poorest in the world.
But the country is edging closer towards elections later this year and the distant prospect of change. Gillian Marles spoke to Amy Fairbairn from Mercy Corps, who just returned from the DRC, about the situation there and the chances for improvements.
