A year ago this week, the small town of Charlottesville in Virginia was the scene of a demonstration by a white supremacist group that descended into violence. The death of a young counter-protestor, killed when a car driven by a supporter of the rally ploughed into onlookers, caused outrage across the United States. But it was the reaction of the newly elected President Donald Trump that grabbed the headlines when he failed to condemn the action and decried fault on both sides.

Sandy Hausman is the Virginia Public Radio bureau chief in Charlottesville. She's been following the situation closely in the year since the riot, and spoke to Bill Whiteford.
