The Roots of Saudi

The storm of international outrage over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi while visiting the Saudi consulate in Turkey shows no sign of subsiding. But the state is no stranger to controversy: a repressive, religiously intolerant regime with a poor record on human rights and its ongoing military action in Yemen has risked putting it beyond the pale with the international community.

But how did the current power structure in Saudia Arabia come to pass? Isabel Fraser spoke to Dr Ian Black, Visiting Senior Fellow at the LSE's Middle East Centre about how its political cultural norms grew out of Britain鈥檚 involvement in its founding in 1932.
