āI set up a nursery to care for children with disabilitiesā
Paediatric nurse Kathryn Brown set up Nana Gās nursery in Portadown, one of the only nurseries in Northern Ireland to care for children with complex needs.
The charity Contact, which supports families with disabled children across the UK, says almost three quarters of parents who have children with additional needs are effectively 'locked out of the labour market' because of a lack of affordable, good quality childcare.
Kathryn says one of the reasons she set up the nursery was so āchildren of all different types of needs can come together and mix in one placeā.
Firefighter Lisaās two-and -a-half year-old son Shae has a cleft lip and palate and CHARGE syndrome.
She says it was āquite hard to hand him over at firstā but Kathrynās nursing background means āheās in excellent handsā.
āIt makes it easier for me to walk back out of the door and go to work.ā
