MappFest cancelled

Malvern has lost a fourth music festival after MappFest announced it won't go ahead in its 10th anniversary year.
Ìý
Organisers say the event won't be going ahead due to the vast increase in audience numbers and a lack of volunteers.
Ìý
The event was scheduled for June but is now set to return in 2020.
Ìý
It's been held on Link Top Common since 2009 and last year raised £3,600 for St Richards Hospice, Headway Worcestershire, Community Action and the Charlotte & Craig Saving Hearts Foundation.
Ìý
This comes in the same week that MappFest was named Malvern Hills District Councils 'People's Choice' Community Project of the Year.
Ìý
Other local festivals that haven't been staged in recent years include Malvern Rocks, The Colwall Family Music Festival and the Big Chill.

In session

In the week that police in Herefordshire & Worcestershire increased security around mosques, after the mass shootings in New Zealand, the local community has been showing solidarity with their Muslim friends and neighbours.
Ìý
And that includes our local music community; Imaner were among hundreds of people who came together at the Central Mosque in Redditch yesterday lunchtime for a 'Unity Gathering'.
Ìý
As well as running a variety of open mic nights across the area, last year Imaner started up Glastonbeoley near Redditch - after Deb's birthday plans snowballed!
Ìý
More than a thousand people turned up, raising ten thousand pounds for local charities.
Ìý
Glastonbeoley will be back again this year, with Deb and Dave hoping to raise even more.
Ìý

New venue

A new music venue is opening in Worcester.
Ìý
Annie's already exist in Nottingham and Derby, but now has also taken up residence in The Courtyard on St Nicholas Street.
Ìý
While the business is primarily built on 32 authentically Rhode Island style burger recipes, they're also keen to host lots of live music in the city.
Ìý
They've already been hosting gigs, despite not having their official launch until next weekend.

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Music Introducing in Ledbury

This month's sessions were recorded at Ledbury's Market Theatre which has quite the history...
Ìý

It's owned by the Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society and built on the site of the old Market Theatre which used the be the only venue of its kind in Herefordshire for 18 years! That was between 1961 and 1979.
Ìý
The old theatre almost burnt down in the '80s by an accidental fire behind the building - but the damage was repaired by young offenders.
Ìý
Then, over 10 years later, when it was being demolished to make way for the theatre we see today, it caught fire AGAIN - which the dramatic society say could have been the poltergeist of the old building refusing to be upstaged and insisting on going out in style!
Ìý
Nowadays, it's run entirely by volunteers and they host a range of performances from plays to state-of-the-art cinema screenings and music events.
Ìý

Mello Festival, Upton

It's the festival that started life at Throckmorton Airfield but now takes over the Severn End Country Estate each May.
Ìý
Mello is the sister to the Upton Sunshine Festival and is now in its fourth year.
Ìý
This year Goldie Lookin' Chain, EMF and Craig Charles have already been confirmed to appear.
Ìý
We visit the site two months ahead of the speakers and the lighting systems going up.

Features

  • In the gig guide: Seth Lakeman is set to play Hereford Cathedral.
  • In the news:ÌýThe New York Times on Mott The Hoople 74’s US Tour.

Musicians' Masterclass

We're looking at the various ways of standing out in your particular genre.
Ìý
But does skin colour affect your chances of "making it" and should the industry be less worried about musical genres?
Ìý
This week, we hear from Asian Network presenters Bobby Friction and Nikita Chauhan alongside music manager and publicist Samir Ahmed.

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Music Introducing in Droitwich

Our next recording session takes place on the last Sunday in March at the Norbury Theatre in Droitwich.
Ìý
The 176-seat venue, which is run by local volunteers, hosts a variety of events from plays, cinema screenings and live streaming from the West End.
Ìý
The venue is situated inside Norbury House, an Art Deco building which started life as a luxury hotel - although it's role of putting up guests overnight was reasonably short-lived, having been used as a military hospital in WWII.
Ìý
The Norbury Theatre came into being in 1962 for the sole purpose for local amateur societies having a venue to perform at.
Ìý
Nowadays, they share Norbury House with 96 flats. The theatre takes up the largest area of the building, including dressing rooms on the first floor, extensive properties storage in the cellars and scenery in the old kitchens! Not forgetting, of course, the auditorium, foyer and stage!
Ìý
The event takes place between 2pm and 6pm and admission is free.Ìý
