Eric Whitacre was asked to set E.E. Cummings text, i carry your heart with me for the wedding of two of his friends. At the time, he couldn鈥檛 find the right music for the text, but returning to it a few years later was struck by the phrase 鈥渋 carry your heart with me. i carry it in my heart. i am never without it鈥�. The idea of never being without the heart of a loved one is at the core of the piece.
