Side Hustles

Episode 2 of 6

Documentary series exploring some of the problems faced by millennials. In the hope of boosting his own finances, Duncan looks for easy money in the weird world of side jobs.

In the hope of boosting his own finances, Duncan looks for easy money in the weird world of 'side hustles'.

An internet search leads him to such weird experiences as having tea with naughty sheep, mindful sea swimming, alpaca trekking and personalised photoshoots around Edinburgh. Are these people making some serious extra cash and having fun at the same time, or is there more to it?

Inspired by what he sees and learns from ultimate side hustler Charles and his personalised photoshoots, Duncan decides he can make his own, and calls out for volunteers to help him test-drive his ‘slow motion romantic video’ service. He meets Susie and Jock, a young couple keen to have their love captured in slow motion. However, it’s not long before Duncan learns a side hustle can easily become more of a 'side hassle'.

With schoolchildren half his age making money in using automated e-commerce ‘drop-shipping businesses’, Duncan calls on his old school friend Minton, a shop worker who boasts about setting up a drop-shipping business that sells ladders in his spare time. Is drop-shipping the key to making plenty of extra money, or is it just a scam?

Uninspired by Minton’s ladder business and lack of functioning website, Duncan travels to Essex to speak to 16-year-old Cara, someone more successful at drop-shipping and who even made enough money from it to take her whole family on holiday to Las Vegas. Maybe Cara’s expert advice will set Duncan on his path to e-commerce greatness.

Looking for something easier, Duncan finds Fiverr, a website where people will seemingly do whatever you want if you pay them enough, such as product testimonials or even voiceovers. He decides to offer his services as a ‘deep voiceover for hire’ - but will anybody want his voice?

In a search for more lucrative side hustles, Duncan finally stumbles across OnlyFans, a fast solution to make decent money - but what is the trade-off? Duncan cautiously dips his toe in and speaks to Richard, a young OnlyFans user from Paisley who started selling explicit images in aid of paying his vet bills. Is Duncan willing to follow in Richard’s footsteps?
