Helping my community – “it’s like we’re in a warâ€

Households across the UK are coming under increasing pressure because of rising living costs. In Middlesbrough, the Genesis Project is a rare oasis of hope.

From the outside, it’s a fairly typical church hall. But step inside and this is something special. The Genesis Project in Middlesbrough is a community offering a lifeline to increasing numbers of people who are struggling in one of the most deprived parts of England. It’s busy – because times are tough. ‘Heat or eat’ is how those who come here describe their daily life. They’re queuing for food they can’t afford in the shops. But for three pounds they can come to this church hall and fill a carrier bag with fruit and veg, tins or even prepared meals and feed their families for a week. For 5 Minutes On, Fiona Trott, North of England Correspondent for Ö÷²¥´óÐã News – has been to meet the Reverend Kath Dean who set the project up.
